It's 9:15am here deep-in-the-heart-o-Texas. We start school at 9:00am. I wake everyone up at 8:00am. They all get up and get dressed and then get to watch some tv or whatever else they want to do until 8:30am when breakfast is served. Everyone eats, thanks me for the wonderful breakfast, brushes their teeth and eagerly prepare to start their schoolwork. Really. I'm not kidding. It says that on my schedule!
However, here it is now 9:18am and the only one awake, dressed and fed is the 5 year old...because he likes to get up early and invade my private, quiet time with the house to myself.
The girl is sleeping because she has been sick and I decided not to wake her, but to let her rest and get better. The boys are asleep because when I came home from my knitting group last night, the husband was asleep in the recliner, and the boys were playing Call of Duty--Modern Warfare on the PS3....WAY past their bedtime. The 5 year old and I have gone in to wake them up twice so far, but to no avail. On the one hand, this is frustrating...on the other hand, I'm free to write this post...so I'm not trying all that hard to get them up at the moment. Most of the country isn't even having school today because of all the snow. So really, is it fair that we should have to have school just because we live in a place where the sun is shining and it's quickly approaching 50 degrees outside? Even in Dallas they aren't starting school until 10:00am. I think 10:00am is a lovely time to start school today, so 10:00am it is!
So, back to the original purpose of this post--I Do Love a Good Gadget. A couple of years ago, thanks to a generous gift from one of my husband's clients, I received a lovely iPod Nano with Nike Plus that totally transformed my then-running, now-walking life. I was able to listen to my favorite music, or even audiobooks while I got my daily exercise all while my mileage and speed were being tracked and recorded online for my future knowledge and use. It was by far my favorite gadget of all time, and it still holds a very special place in my heart.
However, there is a new contender.
It has long been my theory that the people who need the most recent technology are those who can never afford it, while those who have the funds to purchase all the new wonders don't really need them. For example, flat screen tvs. Those of us who live in tiny houses with way too many people in them, could most certainly use a lovely flat screen tv that hangs on the wall and doesn't take up much needed square footage on the floor. However, the only people that can afford these modern technological marvels are those who have large houses and possibly even an entire media rooms to put one in. You see my point?
I have felt the same way about all the new hand held reading devices on the market today, like the Kindle and the Nook. For those of us with absolutely NO bookshelves in our homes, and no where to put one if we had it, who also happen to love books, this is the best invention EVER! However, even though the prices have started to drop in recent months, they are still a bit in the pricey range.
Enter the smartphone app.
Several months ago, Amazon released a FREE Kindle app for the Android phone. Did I mention that it was FREE????? I couldn't download that thing fast enough! And then I started reading...and reading, and reading, and reading! Basically, no matter where I am, I have a book to read, and believe me--unless I'm in a place where I could be knitting--I'm reading, baby! I even used it way out in the middle of nowhere to download a book to read to David while on a fishing trip with the family. He got bored and wanted to come and sit in the shade with me. I searched the Kindle store from my phone, found a FREE book of classic children's fairy tales, downloaded it within seconds and began reading to my boy!
I currently have one Diana Galbaldon novel, A Daily Devotional from Oswald Chambers, an Andy Andrews book for teens that my boys are reading for school, and my favorite--Lisa McKay's book "You Can Still Wear Cute Shoes" all on my Kindle ready for reading whenever I want...no bookshelf required.
So how about you, do you love gadgets too, what is your current favorite?
A small glimpse into the daily life of a homeschooling, cake decorating, mother of four (who would rather be knitting...most of the time).

Aspirations
As I said, we had a great time in Luckenbach this weekend. I'd love to tell you all about the event, and what it is for, but I just remembered a few hours ago that I have a big cake project to make for an event tomorrow evening....yikes! So, I'm running around like a crazy person today and tomorrow to get it finished.
In the meantime, I can share with you the video that my husband took of the Trials Demonstration that two of the Mizell brothers put on for all the spectators. My boys can't do all of these tricks yet, but someday....

A Bright Spot
Okay, so if my last post depressed you just a bit...this should cheer you right up!
I actually have the second part of my previous post still to write... but not today. Check back with me tomorrow. In the meantime, watch the video again! And if the player is not working for you for some reason, try copying and pasting this link.

I TOTALLY stole this from Shalee's Diner by the way. :)

Christmas is Over....I think
Here at the house of Kids and Cakes, we took our Christmas tree down just 9 days ago....
No need to adjust your bifocals or check your calendar. Yes, I meant February 22.
There were multiple reasons for leaving it up after Christmas: celebrating the "season" not just the "day", it went up late and the kids wanted to keep it for awhile, most of my storage boxes got water damaged somehow and I needed to find new storage boxes.... Those were all reasons why it was still up in January. But the reason it was still up in February was that we homeschool over here.
You see, when you homeschool, just about everything can be turned into a lesson of some sort. And so our Christmas tree became just that...a science experiment. You see, it was still drawing water, and looking quite lovely far into January. Oh, did I fail to mention that it was a real tree? It was. So, there it was looking good, and still pretty fresh a month after Christmas....and that my friends, shouts "Challenge!" to a homeschooler.
We decided to see just how long that tree would: a) continue to draw water, b) hold onto it's needles, c) keep it's branches strong and upright, and d) keep it's lovely dark green color. And the results are in!
a) up until about the 1st or 2nd week in February
b) never did lose any needles, until we started taking off the lights, and that pulled some off. They were very brittle by then, but they hung onto the tree unless you knocked them off somehow.
c) the branches started drooping around Valentines day, but only a few ornament slid off, it still held most of them up just fine.
d) about the same time it started to droop, the color started to fade.
So, what was the lesson learned in all of this? If you buy a real Christmas tree, buy a Frasier Fir and buy it from your local Sertoma Club, because that tree was AWESOME!

This is David
I have a list in the other room that is half a mile long...and I'm not supposed to be on the computer until a bit more of that list is completed...but I realize that I've been missing for a couple of days, and the twitching was really getting to be a problem! So I decided to just pop in and show you a quick picture of the cake I did this weekend for a woman about to have her first baby...er, babies. There are THREE babies in there, my friends, THREE!!!
So, I figured, I couldn't turn down the request to make her cake. This woman deserves a very special cake, don't you think? Now, I should post a picture of the shower invitation before I show the cake, because it would make more sense...but the batteries are dead in the camera, so I can't take one. However, since she is having two girls and one boy, the invitation simply had a pea pod shaped like a hammock with bows on the ends and a blue pea sitting in between two pink peas in the pea pod. Very simple, and very cute...
...I added some personality to the "Sweet Peas"...

This has gone down as one of my favorite cakes of all time. I just love those little peas!
Okay, and because many of my friends and family read this thing...I also thought I'd share this little video clip from Thanksgiving. Benji turned on the video camera and turned the screen around so that David could see himself...he found himself quite entertaining, and even started to sing "Halleluia--Praise Ye the Lord" right up until he discovered the bouncy ball was in the background...then all was lost.
Why he resorted to baby talk, I don't know...and as for those dirty hands? Well, he is a boy. And he was outside. Enough said. :)

As a rule, I don't blog about the extended family...
...but technically Gerry isn't family until the wedding in November. Poor, poor, Gerry. You really should have married my niece earlier.
So yesterday we were all at my great-nephew's very 1st birthday party (which by the way was a really good party where all the kids had a blast, and my niece painted some amazing decorations), when I heard my future nephew telling a story...a Wal-Mart story. Apparently, he and my great-nephew were in Wal-Mart looking at a few items, and as is often the case when wandering through the Wal-Mart, he realized that they had been there for about an hour and they really should get going, so they headed to the check-out lanes. As is also usually the case in the Wal-Mart, all the line were quite long. So, he found the shortest line and proceeded to stand in said line. I'm not exactly sure how long he stood in said line (perhaps he eliminated that tid-bit of information from his story on purpose), but at some point he realized that his basket was empty....did you catch that? He hadn't found anything to buy at the Wal-Mart....but he was standing in the check-out line anyway! BWAH-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA!!!!!!
As I was picking myself up off the ground and wiping the tears from my eyes (you know, from all the laughing), I leaned over to my sister and said, "I wonder if he realizes that he's just been blogged!"
I think I might enjoy having some more blog-fodder in this family!!!

Twitter, Twitter, Tweet, Tweet, Tweet!
Okay, how many of you out there have heard of this whole Twitter thing?
And how many of you, when you first heard about it, thought to yourself, "No, no, no, no! I'm not getting sucked into another reason to spend way too much time on the computer...blogging has already taken over my life!!"
I'm telling you, that was exactly what I said the first time I heard about it. And when I began to not even find the time to keep up with the blog, I definitely wasn't interested...until......
I actually had a few minutes this week to catch up on reading some of my favorite blogs and discovered that quite a few of my bloggy friends were Twittering. So, I clicked on their Follow Me on Twitter buttons, and low and behold...I'm Twittering too! It's like express blogging. In just a matter of seconds, I was able to catch up with some of my long lost bloggy buddies and catch them up with me as well. It's TURBO blogging baby!!!
And you know what makes it even better? I can Twitter from my cell phone!!! Now, I have a SmartPhone with real web browsing, so I don't have to worry about text message charges, but those of you with unlimited texting can Twitter from your cell phones for free too! I love my phone, and I love that I can go and read all my favorite blogs on it, but unless the blog is on a Typepad account, I can't leave comments from my phone--a mystery that still has me stumped--so you all never know that I was there at all! But I can not only read all my friend's "Tweets" on my phone, I can "Tweet" myself!!
It's really a lot of fun, and believe it or not has not taken over every waking minute of my day. I've caught up with a lot of my old blogging friends that I haven't "talked" to in weeks all in just a few minutes!
So, I said all that to say this, (one of my favorite Keith Lamb quotes!) come follow me on Twitter! You can follow even if you don't Twitter yourself, but if you do Twitter, be sure and let me know so I can follow you too!!!

A Heartfelt Plea to the Makers of Lee Jeans and Lee Riders Clothing Lines
Dear Sirs,
I must tell you how much I absolutely LOVE your new "Instantly Slims You" collection of casual-wear. The princess darts on the polo shirts are attractive as well as slimming, and the tummy panels in the shorts and capris really do the trick without feeling tight or binding in anyway.
I am also a HUGE fan of your new "Comfort No-Gap Waistband". I have had trouble all of my life with my waistbands gapping at the small of my back and your new waistbands truly live up to their name. I feel comfortable and gap-less whenever I pull on my burmuda-length cargo shorts. So, I thank you.
However, I do have one small request...
Could you possibly, by any chance, put them both in the same garments???? I must choose each morning whether to be "Instantly Slim" or "Comfortably Gapless", and it is not an easy choice, my friends. If I could be both, I'd be most appreciative, and would sing your praises here on the world-wide-web with utter and reckless abandon.
Sincerely,
The Lady of the House of Kids and Cakes
(where both "instant slimming" and "comfortable gaplessness" are dire necessities.)

I Don't Have Time for This!
I saw this on another blog and had to try it. I really didn't have the time to try it at all, so I only gave it two shots...the first one doesn't count because until you know how it works, you can't type your best :) I intend to go back, when I have more time, (insert laughter here) and try to better my score. Mom...Dana....if you do this, I want to know the results!

Help Me, Please....
After my last hair cut/color catastrophy, I have stayed far, far, away from any scissors and highlight solution wielding people. I was so spoiled when I had a friend who did amazing hair at even more amazing prices! Alas, she no longer can do hair, and so I must save up for a very long time to partake of such services. Therefore, I decided that I needed to have some sort of amunition with me the next time I put myself at the mercy of anyone with scissors in their hands! So, I logged on to a virtual makeover site and tried out different hair styles on a really bad picture of myself, to help me choose what would look best and then take the picture with me to the scissor-happy stylist.
After showing a number of pictures to my immediate family, these two are the final choices. One of the two actually happens to be the exact style I wore 15 years ago...I'm not exactly sure what that implies, but there it is.
ANYHOO! I thought I'd take advantage of the two of you reading this thing, and ask for opinions. Which do you like best? Any better ideas? Help me, PLEASE???

Yankee or Dixie?
Okay, my friend, Heather, sent this to me and I decided to post it here so I can find out just exactly who my friends are! This is a short quiz to determine if you are more Yankee or Dixie...or at least whether you speak Southern or Northern!
So, just go here and take the quiz, then be sure and come back and post your results in the comments!
And in case you were wondering...yankee parents not withstanding, this girl scored 80% DIXIE!

I Just HAD To Do This One
I know, there are all kinds of these little "Blogthings" out there to do, but ya'll, this one was about CAKE...I HAD to do it. I just HAD to! Besides, it said something nice about me. Much nicer than this one!

Fun, comforting, and friendly. You are a true classic, and while you're not super cutting edge, you're high quality. People love your company - and have even been known to get addicted to you. |

On the Side...
I know, you were expecting part 2 of the Homeschooling Convention posts, but life is happening today, and I must attend to it! In the meantime...I found this very odd quiz at Real Estate Girl's place this morning. The questions are odd and how they come up with the results is beyond me, however...I think they nailed me. I can't tell you how many times people have said to me "I used to think you were just a flighty little girl, but...." I just tell them I prefer the word "sidetracked" to "flighty", "scatterbrained", "shallow", etc...and yes, I have heard all of those at one time or another! :)
And when you are finished with that, head on over to The Preacher's Wife and read about the "Cow Plop for Charity" cause really, you just have to. And that's all I'm gonna say about that...just head on over...now...go on, get outta here!
You are most like: | ||
|---|---|---|
You are cool and soothing, with a hidden spontanious side. You are deeper than most people percieve, and you care a lot for those whom you surround yourself with.

Weekend Wind Up Part 2--Mother's Day
Well, the daisy cookies were a hit with the girls...and the moms!
And now, for the rest of my weekend wind-up...
For Mother's Day I made this for my mom, who likes apples and has her entire kitchen decorated with apples...even the wall paper is apples! I also gave her a copy of the "Glory Revealed" CD that Boomama has been raving about over at her place because I bought one for myself, and liked it so much that I bought one for my bible study leader as a gift on our last night, and she liked it so much that she bought one for someone else, and I thought my mom would probably like it too...so it just keeps going and going and going! I also gave her a copy of "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane" that I heard about from Sarah at "In the Midst of It" and listened to on CD with my kids who loved it, and we just thought grandma would love it too!
I made this one for my mother-in-law, who loves flowers. Along with this we gave her a hanging basket with three different colors of impatiens in it, and a gift card to Sears Grand where she can get more plants, or clothes, or groceries, or movies, or whatever she wants!
We had Mother's Day dinner at my mom's house with my grandmother. I haven't seen my grandmother since I was very young...maybe 8 years old or so... I can't even remember it's been so long! My parents just moved her down here from Montana. I know the heat will be a big change, but being with family will be good. We had a great time Sunday visiting with her. She has no hearing trouble, so there was no shouting, or repeating of anything, over and over. We got to just talk and laugh together. And although her eyes get tired when she reads for long periods, her eyesight is excellent as well, so we were able to show her the photo-slideshow that I had made for my dad, her son, for his 60th birthday last year. It was a photo journal of his life and was lots of fun to watch again. At dinner, Grandma was concerned that the ladies at the nursing home had sent the wrong version of TUMS for her to take with her meal. It was supposed to be Extra Strength, and they sent Regular. (Yes, she could tell just by looking at the pill!) But when my mom offered to give her two, she immediately said, "No!! I hate 'em!" Which made us all laugh, and forced me to re-tell this story from my sister from another mother, Lisa, over at The Preacher's Wife regarding the dangers of mixing antacids with diet sodas. Everyone got a kick out of that one. Thanks Lisa!!!
And, since I know you are all wondering...
This was my gift for Mother's Day.
This pot usually sits to the right of my front door, and for 10 years it held my "ficus benjamina", known around here as "The Benjamin Tree" which the man and I bought when we brought our little Benjamin (Benji) home from the hospital. It endured many freezes throughout the years and always came back in full force the next spring. However, the winter of 2005-2006 was just more than it could stand, and it never came back. I have been looking at that empty pot by my door every day with a very sad heart. So, when I saw these hibiscus trees a few weeks ago, I told young Benjamin that I wanted one for Mother's Day to fill my empty pot. And lo and behold, Sunday morning, I walked up to my front step to find my pot filled with a beautiful hibiscus tree in full bloom!
I really should have taken the picture on Sunday because it had eight beautiful blooms on it. You can see from the second picture that it will have many more in the next few days. I'll be sure to post another picture if it gets lots and lots of blooms all at once again.
So that is it for this edition of the Weekend Wind-Up...better late than never, right?
And now, it is time to hit the list for today! Yesterday, we took out M's toddler bed, and D's baby bed and put in a new twin bed for them to share until he is big enough to join the big boys. Today, we have to go and buy bedding for it. We had one set of sheets for it, but no spread, or shams or anything like that. So, we'll be picking that up along with a rail to keep the little man from falling out while he's sleeping. I also need to get supplies for the 4 cakes, 2 dozen cookies, and 3 cookie bouquets I have on my plate this week. Oh yeah, and the grocery store hasn't seen my face in quite some time what with the whole, way too many cakes and cookies to make in one week, and then the plague which hit immediately after. Although the children are perfectly content to eat Burger King, McDonald's, and Taco Bell for two weeks straight...I am not. Therefore, I intend to hit H.E.B. and make some good, old-fashioned, home made meals for my family this week!
I'll be back with pictures of the cakes and cookies along the way, and maybe even a post or two...in my spare time, LOL! See you soon!
And now, for the rest of my weekend wind-up...

Handbag Tag
Well, I have been busy today cutting out, baking, and icing about 200 cookies....I would post a picture, but they all just have the first color on them. Details will be added tomorrow, and I'll post pictures then for you to see.
In the meantime...
My buddy Lisa over at The Preacher's Wife tagged me for this handbag reveal. You really want to get to know someone? Go through their purse! So, since I really needed to clean out my purse, I'm playing along!
Here is my purse!

I told you I was a baseball fan! Now I had one picked out last fall for football season, but money was tight, and I just couldn't justify it. Maybe this year...
(And yes, I use this purse ALL THE TIME. Even to church! I did switch it out for a wedding once, but otherwise, this is my purse for better or worse. It's actually broken and the strap comes unbuckled all the time, but I love it too much to let it go!!!)
And here is what actually belongs in my purse!

top row: my Bare Escentuals Mineral Veil travel compact, my list of what I am and am not allowed to eat -- it's two pages people, and I can't always remember when I'm out! A package of batteries, because we always seem to need them when we are in the car for game-boys, or two-way radios, or the remote control for the VCR (boy do we sound spoiled!), the two rolls of dimes I keep for unexpected rewards for the kids when they do good stuff. The idea is that they get dimes when they obey without questioning, or help someone without being asked, or other such things, and then they put them in a bank to save up for a new Playstation 3...they have a LONG way to go to get that new Playstation! My PDA, which happens to be a Dell Axim, because my computer runs Windows XP Media Edition and Palm is not compatible, so I have to have a PDA that runs Windows Mobile. (I'm saving up for a Smart Phone -- then I can blog from ANYWHERE!)
second row: My meds -- the smaller bottle is the Vicodin which I take for pain and must ALWAYS have with me. (I had an attack once while driving, and it is impossible to drive in that kind of pain.) The bigger bottle is my regular stuff I have to take 4 times a day to keep my kidneys functioning at some semblance of normal. My checkbook is next and the embossing that you can't see is the MLB logo. If I had opened it up for the picture, you would have found Houston Astros checks inside! (BIG fan, I'm telling you!) My purple ballpoint pen, 'cause it's my signature color. Next is my wallet, which matches the purse...I may not match my purse to my outfit or to the occasion, but my wallet and my purse DO match, oh yes ma'am they do! My Sally Hansen Hand Therapy for extremely dry skin. I wash my hands A LOT, and I need intense moisture!
bottom row: And finally, my little purple sewing kit -- just in case!
After I snapped the picture, I remembered the outside pocket of my purse. I took another picture that included my "plumping" lip gloss in a lovely rosy/mauve shade and my silver business card case which happens to be empty because I gave them all out when I delivered a cake to a Rehab Clinic with a full waiting room of people who apparently LOVE cake! I did snap another picture, but apparently I turned off the camera before it processed the picture and committed it to memory, because it just isn't there!
And now, for all the things that were in the purse that didn't belong there!

Okay, that pile on the left is a bunch of receipts. There always seems to be someone behind me in the line who is in a HUGE hurry and starts moving up in the line before I can put the receipt in my wallet, so I just shove them in my purse. And just FYI I found only one in the pile that I actually needed to keep! The pile at the top is made up of coupons which I never use for the most part. I just forget I have them! There was one bubble gum wrapper, and one flyer from M's ballet class there on the right. There was also a toy car, and Sponge Bob playing cards that I took away from one of the kids at one time. The broken ear piece to my glasses that Lenscrafters couldn't fix. One old battery that I replaced with one from that package you saw earlier! The tea-light candle was part of a visual aid for one of the lessons in the Bible Study I told you about here And an empty bottle of my all-time favorite lotion "Palmer's Cocoa Butter". It smells like chocolate, and although I can't eat any these days, I can still smell it!
Now here's an interesting little twist for you...I found a hole in the inside pocket of my purse, and these items had found their way through that hole and into the lining of my purse!

That is my old cell-phone that the speaker went out on, so I let D play with it until he started chewing the buttons right off the thing. My pedometer which needs a new battery, but it is not readily available at the Wal-Marts or the H.E.B. (THE grocery store of Central Texas ya'll), so I carry it in my purse just in case I happen to be over by the battery store...yes, there is a store up the road that sells nothing but batteries of all shapes, sizes, and voltage. A penny, a cough drop, and my extra tube of mascara just in case I need a touch up.
So, there you have it. Thanks Lisa for the tag...this was fun, and now I have a nice CLEAN purse!
If anyone else wants to play, consider yourself tagged!

I am SO levelheaded!
I actually kind of figured it would turn out this way. I tend to think logically, and like things that MAKE SENSE. However, I am a messie, and like creating pretty things, like, you know...cakes!
(On a side note, I also write with half printing, and half cursive writing which I INSIST is a result of being, as stated above, even-brained. However, every book, movie, magazine article, etc. that I have seen says this indicates a very psychologically disturbed person! I suppose that could be true as well. I DO have FOUR children after all!)

| You Are 45% Left Brained, 55% Right Brained |
The left side of your brain controls verbal ability, attention to detail, and reasoning. Left brained people are good at communication and persuading others. If you're left brained, you are likely good at math and logic. Your left brain prefers dogs, reading, and quiet. The right side of your brain is all about creativity and flexibility. Daring and intuitive, right brained people see the world in their unique way. If you're right brained, you likely have a talent for creative writing and art. Your right brain prefers day dreaming, philosophy, and sports. |
