No Court of Appeals for Automobiles...

This particular post has been a long time coming. I've been planning it in my head for quite some time, but have not had the time to sit and actually get it written...

Since today is Mother's Day, I've let all responsibilities go out the window, and I've spent the day doing whatever I have wanted to do: church this morning, take out from KFC for lunch, catching up on my DVR recordings, reading my email and cleaning out my inbox, and catching up with some of my favorite blogs! And now, I plan to take a break from reading blogs to actually WRITE SOMETHING on my OWN blog!

This story actually started several years ago...

When I met my husband, he spent his weekends racing his Honda CRX in local Autocross races. During one of these races, he spun out and did something to his clutch which made the car not very competitive for future races. Since he'd just met me, and we'd just started dating, the racing kind of went by the wayside as we were spending every free moment getting to know each other better, and the CRX went back to being just a regular car that took him to and from work, took me out on dates, and drove us away from the church after our wedding. :)

My husband held on to that car long after it stopped running. I think it was always in the back of his mind to get it running again and for us to be able to use it to go out on dates just for fun. Our 2nd born son had also claimed that he wanted to fix it up and let it be his car someday. But time and money didn't allow for any of these scenarios, so the car sat....

A few years ago, we got a notice that we could not have a "junk car" in our driveway, and we were given a date to appear in court to address the situation. Ben went to the court with pictures of the car to show that it wasn't a broken down "junk" car, and to explain that it wasn't registered because it wasn't being used. The judge agreed that it was not a junk car, and it didn't need to be registered if it wasn't being driven on the street, but apparently the law states that an unregistered vehicle cannot be visible from the street, so it needed to be put in the garage. She then gave him three days to make room in the garage and get the car moved into it. Her final ruling stated that the car needed to be moved by that date, or the car would be "towed and abated".

Now, right about the time that all this was going on, we discovered that we were quite unexpectedly expecting another baby! During those 3 days, I miscarried that baby, and consequently, moving the car out of the driveway became the least of our worries. The day, I had to have my D&C, a policeman came to the house with a tow truck driver to take the car away. He felt really bad about the situation, and gave me the information of where they were towing the car, so Ben could get it back when he got home from work.

Ben came home, went to the towing place, paid the fee, and they towed the car back to our house...where it was promptly put in the garage.

There it stayed until a couple of months ago when our growing collection of motorcycles forced it back out to the driveway. We had decided to go ahead and sell it despite it's sentimental value. So, we got a "For Sale" sign and put it out on the driveway. About a week or so later, a policeman came by to let us know that it would have to be moved, but we had 30 days to sell it, or move it back into the garage...

Two weeks later, another policeman came by to inquire as to where we got that car since his records showed that the car was supposed to have been destroyed....

Um, I'm sorry, WHAT????

Apparently, when the first policeman had filed his paperwork to start the 30 day process, that whole "towed and abated" thing popped up. Did you know that abated means crushed??? Yeah, neither did we. I asked the officer exactly what type of a crime a car could possibly commit to warrant the death penalty? He told me he didn't really understand it himself, but apparently when it was towed, it was supposed to be crushed and we weren't supposed to be able to get it back!

Are you kidding me???

Seriously. Mr. Policeman was very nice and tried to help us out since he couldn't figure out why it was to be destroyed either. (I'm thinking the judge didn't know what abated meant any more than we did, and was just trying to sound official!)

Through a series of phone calls and visits to the courthouse, we were eventually told that the current judge would have to rescind the original order for abatement, or they were going to have to take the car and crush it. After several MORE phone calls and visits to the courthouse, we were finally told that the current judge couldn't overrule the previous judge's decision.

Again, are you kidding me???

I made the point that even murderers had the right to appeal their convictions...it fell on deaf ears.

Deeply saddened, we stood by and watched as Mr. Policeman and his tow truck driver took away a piece of our past. While we had already resigned ourselves that we were going to have to part with it, this was not what we had in mind.

I personally think the whole thing was terribly unfair, and if my daughter is ever in the running for Miss America and is asked what she would most like to change in the world, I hope her answer will be that she will call for the rights of cars that have been unjustly sentenced to the death penalty to have the right to appeal to a higher, more understanding court! Because the cars can obviously not speak for themselves...and they need a voice in this unjust court system of ours!

And just for the record, we did look up the definition of the word abate:

a⋅bate

  a⋅bat⋅ed, a⋅bat⋅ing.
–verb (used with object)
1. to reduce in amount, degree, intensity, etc.; lessen; diminish: .
2.
a. to put an end to or suppress (a nuisance).
b. to suspend or extinguish (an action).
c. to annul (a writ).
3. to deduct or subtract: to abate part of the cost.
4. to omit: to abate all mention of names.
5. to remove, as in stone carving, or hammer down, as in metalwork, (a portion of a surface) in order to produce a figure or pattern in low relief.

–verb (used without object)
6. to diminish in intensity, violence, amount, etc.: The storm has abated. The pain in his shoulder finally abated.
7. Law. to end; become null and void.

Still don't see how that means We are going to crush your car....hhmmmmph!!

Shafted...AGAIN!

As if it weren't enough that OU beat us out for the Big 12 Championship, AND for the National Championship Game, now, we're being shafted again...by Pop Tarts of all things!

Share photos on twitter with Twitpic

While I am thrilled, that OU didn't rate high enough to be shown on the actual PopTarts, you will notice that they and many other schools are still represented on the box? Lots of other schools...

BUT NOT UT!!! Tongue Out

I suggest a boycott of PopTarts until they make a box with UT represented on it! And while we're at it, how about a Wheaties Box too? And for all you Aggies out there, you didn't make the box either, so quit your giggling!

A Public Service Announcement on Putrescence....

For those of you who have not memorized the entire The Princess Bride movie (are there really any of you out there?)

Shall I start with the fact that last night my soon to be eleven year old son came to me and said, "Mom, the living room smells like throw up"? Yeah, he did. And yeah, it did. However, I thought it was the leftover Mac and Cheese from lunch that I had thrown in the trash. "Just take the trash out, and all will smell better by morning." Uh-huh....

Except morning came, and it was worse. A lot worse.

So, I lit my Febreze candles, gave them time to start working their magic (they really are magic!), and went in search of The Putrescence.

May I just take a moment here to give a small piece of advice? If you find a Thermos: Foogo--Leak-proof straw bottle leaking from the bottom, DON'T! OPEN! IT! It makes a spectacular fountain...yep, it so does. (The Putrescence is now all over the clothes I was wearing, and I see a second shower in my very near future!) Oh, and the Febreze candles, can only do so much when The Putrescence is actually all.over.you.

Now, in my defense...we have different cuppies for different drinks throughout the day. I thought that the cup in question was the water cup. (I can just hear my friend Randy now "What'd you do? You THOUGHT!" Randy is a very funny fellow...RIGHT!) In fact, the liquid leaking out of the bottom was perfectly clear...like water...only it wasn't.

Anyway, had I known that it was the milk cup, it would have been in the dishwasher, and not out on the table. From now on, ALL cups will go into the dishwasher at night. He really doesn't need to have a cup of water handy during the night anyway, right? Right!

**This is the end of this Public Service Announcement**

And to think, I was considering getting on here this morning and telling you all that I was having total writer's block and I'd be back when I had something to say!

Now honestly...how many of you are wishing I had stuck with that original plan?

Uh-huh, me too!

Now if you want to have a better experience in Blogland today, go here and watch the video. It is amazing, and will totally redeem your day after reading this post!

When all else fails....post pictures!

It's been ZiCam central around here lately. Ben started it and stayed home from work on Friday. Then it was Maddie and me, and now it's Dave and I think Jon...although he won't admit it. Hopefully, we all got it at a good time, and we'll all feel better by Thursday. It would really stink if we couldn't taste our turkey and pumpkin pie!

Anyway, it's been awhile since I posted any pictures for you...mainly because I haven't been making any cakes! But as you know, we had a wedding here last weekend, and I did make the wedding cake. The weekend before that, we had a baby shower for a very good friend, so I broke my "No Cakes this Month" rule for her, and I made the cake for her shower.

The shower was a "Rubber Ducky" theme, so I made a "Rubber Ducky holding onto his blankie" cake.

Then of course, there was Wedding Week... The preparations for the cake went really well, everything on schedule etc. (Dave did get into one of the cake layers while it was cooling, but he only destroyed the part that I cut off for leveling anyway, so....whew!) The big issue was that it was 80 degrees here when I baked the cake, iced the cake, and covered the cake in fondant. Then, I took the cake to the venue the night before the wedding and left it there to be stacked and decorated the next day. Overnight, the temperature dropped into the 50's...big problem for the fondant. As soon as I started stacking the cakes, the fondant started to crack. I was able to turn the layers so that the cracking was all on the back side of the cake, and it didn't show from the front, but I was so disappointed! It all turned out okay I guess, but not what I was hoping for. I've done 5 wedding cakes and three were fondant-covered. I've never had this happen before, so I didn't realy know what to do about it. The other two fondant cakes were in the summer, so perhaps that was the difference. I did figure out some things that could be done to prevent this problem again...I just wish I had known to do them before...sigh.

On a brighter note, I also supplied the flower-girl for the wedding, and she turned out beautifully!

Finally, we had our annual Thanksgiving dinner at church yesterday, and for the 2nd year, I was asked to create cookie bouquets for the kids' tables. The idea is to have something fun for them to look at, and then when dinner is finished, they each get a cookie from the bouquet. So, I made 4 of these arrangements...

...for the younger kids who still sit with their parents (and we didn't really want to arm with sticks!), I made separate cookies and individually wrapped them.
It has been a long weekend, and obviously with the holiday on Thursday, we'll be busy this week as well. So today, we're taking it easy and trying to nurse our colds so we can all be better and back to work tomorrow! All prayers are welcome...as always! :)

Oh, and I'm still looking for Thanksgiving songs, so if you know of any, leave them in the comments please!

A Hair-Raising Day....

Yes, I got my hair done. No, I'm not doing the happy dance quite so much anymore. May I just say that I miss my friend Candy who used to do my hair? I mean I really, really, miss her! That said, I guess it's not horrible. It's just a bit more "hip" than I am. It's not so much "frosted" as it is streaked. It looked pretty good when it was wet, but once she dried it, it became a LOT more platinum and a LOT more stripey than I really like it.

And the cut is just weird. The idea was to trim off about 3 inches and then add some long layers to frame my face and give me some more options when I wear it up... The reality is that there is a distinct line across my hair separating the longer section from the shorter section...sigh.

On the brighter side, the man likes it. When I told him that I hated it, he said, "I think it looks good. It looks, you know, kinda like the way they do it now. I actually like it...a lot. It's kinda s*xy." And THAT ladies is why I married that man....well, that and the fact that he makes pretty babies and has great legs!

As for the continuing saga of my kidney surgery...yes, we're having it as planned, however, two different people wimped out and cancelled theirs, so mine got moved up and I have to be at the hospital at 6:00 IN THE MORNING!!! Have I mentioned that I'm not exactly a morning-type of person? Well, I'm not. And all I've got to say is that they are very lucky that they will be providing me with an hour or so of deep uninterupted sleep, or I would totally rebel! Yes, I am looking forward to the sleep. I am not looking forward to when they will forcibly wake me from said sleep and make me go home. You would think they would take pity on the poor mother of 4 kids and let her get a little extra sleep in! Then again, they charge by the half-hour, so I guess it's a good thing that they will wake me up and force me out!

One thing you can all pray for (besides the obvious-a successful outcome to the surgery) is that the payment will go through in the morning. Today, the insurance company was having issues with their computers and the payment wouldn't go through even though I have the money in my account there. If it doesn't go through tomorrow morning at 6:00am, I will have to find another method of payment BEFORE I can have my surgery. I don't know about you, but I don't keep $1200+ dollars in my purse...or in my bank account for that matter! So, I'd appreciate any prayers that it will all work out in the morning as planned.

Now, I need to get to bed. I have a lot to do tomorrow before I go in, and I'm in too much pain to do any of it now, so I'll crash for now and get up early in the morning to get stuff done before I go. And hopefully I'll be feeling a whole lot better and be relatively pain free in a day or two. :)

I don't know if I'll be back to update tomorrow or not, and I don't know if the place we are going for the weekend will have internet access or not, but I'll update as soon as I possibly can to make sure you all know how the surgery went and, of course, to post a picture of my hair...such as it is!

As always, thanks for stopping by.

Another long day...

Well, since I was sick all week, I had to get all my cookies and cakes made today. M had her dress rehearsal for tomorrow's ballet recital at 3:00pm, so everything had to be finished and ready for delivery before 2:00pm.

I got all the cookies finished without a problem. I didn't take a picture because they were just more baseballs and really, do you NEED to see any more baseball cookies? I didn't think so.

So, after I finished all the cookies and left them on racks to dry, I did this.

Now, I know that it is difficult to see from this picture and this angle, but that is a baseball mitt holding a baseball. The mitt came out beautifully. I was thrilled! The ball, not so much...if you look closely at the picture, you can see that the bottom of the ball is not quite round. That is because the fondant was lifting from the cake. By the time I got back from delivering the cookies and taking M to her rehearsal, the fondant was cracked and puckered and the ball was no longer anywhere close to being round! I realized, after a phone call to my favorite cake decorating store, that with the humidity here lately, the fondant wasn't drying fast enough and that caused the problem. Sooooo, I turned the AC down really low, and I removed all the fondant from the ball and re-covered it. It came out much better this time and the client was totally happy with it....whew!

Now, on to much better pictures...

This is a picture I snapped of the two littlest this morning. They both woke up WAY TO EARLY (4:00am) while I was trying to get all the cookies baked and decorated. I got them to lay down on the couch with a movie, and this is what I saw when I came back to check on them.

It's a little creepy seeing that the boy sleeps with one eye half open. Maybe it was a reaction to the flash, cause I've never noticed it before...ewww!

And here is the girl at her dress rehearsal for her ballet recital. She is a "Summer Daisy" and they dance to a very sweet version of "Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary."

And that my friends is it for today. In all my craziness today, I forgot to eat, and take my medicine, and now I have a wicked headache and a big day of ballet tomorrow. So, I'll be back another time with an actual post, but for now I'm going to eat and sleep. Good night all, and don't forget to pray for Ethan, Kelli, and little Cameron.

In Which I Completely PANIC!

Oh, my friends, I am literally sick to my stomach. I can hardly breathe. My worst cake related fear has happened, well--my second worst fear. I got a call today that sent me into a complete panic attack. I was hired to do a wedding cake for someone this coming June, and back in March, she sent me an email asking if I could do her wedding shower cakes as well. I agreed without knowing dates. It turned out that when she sent me the confirmation of what she wanted, she only included one shower date, and let me know that her sister would contact me with the details. The date she gave me was May 5th.

I had already agreed to do another wedding on that day, but figured that as long as I could deliver the cake for the shower the day before, all would be well...

So, last week I was emailing back and forth with the sister finalizing details and she happened to mention that she could either get the cake early on Saturday before my other wedding delivery, or on Sunday after church. WHAT??? The shower is on Sunday? Well, there's no problem then. There is no conflict with the wedding! I mentioned that I had originally been told the shower was on a Saturday, and she confirmed that it was, in fact, on Sunday. What we never talked about was WHICH SUNDAY!

Guess what phone call I got today? "WHERE IS OUR CAKE???" It was one hour before the shower, and there was no way for me to even bake the cake, much less decorate it! Now, I know it wasn't my fault. I know there was no way for me to know. I even went back and looked at every email we had sent back and forth and the only date ever mentioned was May 5th, (thank goodness I still have all those emails!) but I am still sick over the whole thing. It turns out she does have a shower next Saturday, but that isn't the one they wanted the cake for.

I immediately sent an email to both the bride and her sister with a copy of the original email with the date of May 5th on it, and let them know how sick I was over the whole thing and offered to make the cake for next Saturday's shower if they wanted me to. I am now anxiously awaiting a response. HOPING and PRAYING that it will consist of "No, we aren't mad at you. It was my mistake. And we'd love for you to do the cake next weekend." But I am completely nervous and literally sick to my stomach over the whole thing. The only thing I can imagine that would be worse would be to have messed up the actual wedding rather than just the shower.

Ya'll please pray that they won't hold this against me. Pray that they will realize there was no way for me to know the date was this weekend. Pray that they aren't angry with me. (I really don't like people to be angry with me.) And please pray that I can sleep tonight. I'm afraid that I'm going to dream of messing up next week's orders all week long and I'll be a total basket case...or more of one than I already am! I just wish one of them would call or email and let me know what they are thinking. I had a mentor tell me once that 94% of all fears never come to pass. I'm holding on to that, but I'm still really nervous about the whole thing.

((((SIGH))))
